STATEMENT: Inclusive Action Condemns IRS and DHS Agreement to Share Immigrant Taxpayer Data; Continues Legal Fight

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has entered into an agreement to share confidential taxpayer data with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to target undocumented workers as a part of President Trump’s destructive mass deportation agenda.

Inclusive Action for the City is a plaintiff in a lawsuit to prevent the IRS from unlawfully disclosing taxpayer information to immigration enforcement authorities. The agreement would violate longstanding legal protections that are foundational to our tax system, infringe the civil rights and data privacy of millions of workers, and devastate the economy from coast to coast.

“We’re horrified by the revelation that the IRS and DHS have finalized an illegal plan to attack immigrant taxpayers who have played by the rules, worked hard, and contributed to our communities," said Rudy Espinoza, Chief Executive Officer, Inclusive Action for the City. “We will continue to fight this disastrous action in the courts, and work with our partners to protect immigrant workers and small business owners in Los Angeles and across the country.”

Co-plaintiffs are Centro de Trabajadores Unidos, Immigrant Solidarity DuPage, and Somos Un Pueblo Unido. Plaintiffs are represented by Public Citizen Litigation Group, Alan Morrison, and Raise the Floor Alliance.

Plaintiffs filed for a preliminary injunction last week to halt any potential data sharing, while the merits of this case have yet to be heard in court and the litigation is ongoing.
