CORE

Community Owned Real Estate (CORE) is an anti-displacement strategy to preserve small businesses in gentrifying neighborhoods by acquiring commercial real estate, getting local tenants into the commercial spaces, and converting tenants to owners when desired.

CORE is a partnership between Inclusive Action, East LA Community Corporation, Little Tokyo Service Center, with lending support from Genesis LA. CORE currently consists of 5 commercial buildings on the Eastside of Los Angeles, which are occupied by over 20 tenants who run local media, sell healthy foods, teach youth photography and more.

The ultimate goal of CORE is to create pathways for our tenants to join the ownership group of the property they work in. As a lender and business coach, we offer business coaching for first-time commercial property owners, and an opportunity for them to access capital for purchasing property. We believe CORE is a scalable initiative that can change how we protect our communities from harmful market speculation.

We partnered with the Small Business Anti-Displacement Network (SBAN), in which we evaluate the progress made toward achieving CORE’s goals and the challenges experienced in trying to achieve them.

Watch now! Small Business Anti-Displacement Network created a short documentary which features the story of small business owners and communities fighting gentrification in Miami’s Little Santo Domingo, Chicago’s Puerto Rico Town, and our very own Boyle Heights and East LA.
