Los Angeles – we did it! We’re number one…in traffic -__-According to this Los Angeles Times article, we earned this top spot by spending 81 hours, per person (in 2015), in traffic. But, before you start celebrating by listening to “We Are the Champions,” presumably from the inside of your car because you’re probably reading this while stuck in traffic, remember that traffic is bad, m’kay? For example, according to this article:
“…higher levels of congestion are initially associated with faster economic growth. But, above a certain threshold, congestion starts to become a drag on growth. Specifically, congestion seems to slow job growth when it gets to be worse than about 35 to 37 hours of delay per commuter per year.”
If the economic effects aren’t enough to get your goat, scientists are concerned that traffic congestion is exposing us to chemicals that are taking a real toll on our brains; and contributes to“2,200 premature deaths annually.”But let’s not spiral into the darkness faster than Ben Affleck after fielding questions regarding poor Batman v Superman reviews. No, friends - rage against the dying of the light, because someday, robot cars may save the day (ormake matters worse?). I know! How about we take matters into our own hands and get behind organizations likeInvesting in Place, and support their awesome recommendations for a moreequitable, county-wide transportation plan. Or, we can let sleeping dogs lie and continue with our slow, hazy ride. I mean, it’s not like there are better things to do with that time, right? Well…*Note: I rounded down the info below to 80 hours purely for aesthetics…and because I hate odd numbers.
